240 WEST STREET: DESIGNING WHAT’S NEXTPROJECT OVERVIEWWhat do you think should be built at 240 West Street in Annapolis, Maryland?This year's ACE challenge asks students to reimagine an approximately two-acreproperty along West Street, an important corridor connecting downtown Annapolis withthe neighborhoods and commercial areas farther west. The surrounding area includesresidential neighborhoods, businesses, offices, restaurants, multifamily housing, historicproperties, and contemporary development.Unlike a traditional design problem, there is no predetermined building type or program.Students will begin by studying the site and its surroundings. Each team will thendetermine what they believe belongs at 240 West Street and develop a proposal thatresponds to the site's opportunities, neighborhood context, and real-world constraints.Projects may include housing, retail, restaurants, hospitality, offices, community orcultural uses, public space, mixed-use development—or something entirely different!
